Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve as it passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. When conservative treatment is no longer effective, surgical release offers a quick, safe, and reliable solution.

Compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel affects many working individuals. It is often related to repetitive motions and long hours of computer use, but may also result from injury, inflammation in the area, or endocrine disorders.

Typical symptoms include tingling and numbness in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger, as well as sharp, shooting pain.

If left untreated, weakness of the hand and fingers may develop, along with irreversible damage to the median nerve.

Symptoms often worsen at night or during manual activities.

Surgery releases the carpal tunnel and decompresses the median nerve. Improvement is usually noticed immediately after the procedure.

A preoperative consultation with a plastic surgeon is required, as well as nerve conduction testing (electromyography, EMG) beforehand.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and takes about 15 minutes. Postoperative discomfort is mild, and complications are rare.

Recovery lasts 10 to 14 days. During this time, hand activities must be modified, and specific exercises – explained by your surgeon – should be performed.
