Upper blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid correction

Loose, sagging skin on the upper eyelids can cover the eyelashes and create a tired or even sad appearance. With surgical correction of the upper eyelids, we restore a youthful, refreshed and brighter look to your face.

With surgical correction of the upper eyelids – upper blepharoplasty – we remove excess, drooping skin from the upper lids, and when necessary, tighten the underlying muscle and reshape or remove enlarged fat pads within the eyelid.

This reduces upper eyelid puffiness, the feeling of heavy, tired eyes and can improve the visual field when sagging skin has partially obstructed vision.

During the procedure we can also refine the shape of the eye aperture and lift the outer eye corners (canthoplasty or canthopexy).

Upper blepharoplasty is most commonly performed under local anaesthesia and takes 30 to 60 minutes; if desired, the procedure can also be done under sedation or general anaesthesia.

Surgical scars are hidden in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and become virtually invisible once healed.

The procedure is frequently combined with lower eyelid surgery (lower blepharoplasty) or with a brow lift.

A thorough preoperative consultation and examination are essential to define your wishes, expectations, and to determine the most suitable surgical technique.

Recovery takes only a few days, and most daily activities can be resumed the day after surgery. With a special suturing technique and transparent suture material, we ensure the incision heals as discreetly as possible. Sutures are removed after 7 days.

Bruising and swelling may occur, typically resolving within 1 to 2 weeks; once the stitches are removed, these can easily be covered with makeup.

Postoperative discomfort is mild, and complications are rare.

Because of temporary swelling and bruising, we recommend several days off work.

Sports, strenuous activities, and lifting heavy objects should be avoided for 1 to 2 weeks. Contact lenses should not be worn for one week after surgery.

Upper blepharoplasty does not correct fine lines at the outer corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), but these can be easily and effectively treated with botulinum toxin or ablative skin rejuvenation procedures.
